I signed on-line this morning to catch up on the top headlines across the major news sites and I was quite impressed with MSNBC’s homepage. I’ve seen some good Twitter integrations on Websites and I’ve seen some that leave a lot to be desired. MSNBC.com got it right. What I enjoy about the way MSNBC.com integrates Twitter is that the stream is focused on a specific headline and is located right next to the story’s placement. I’m a total fan of Websites synergizing traditional Web content with social media tools as opposed to solely relying on one or the other. Not only because social signals influence organic search rankings, but also because it makes for a great customer experience.
By placing its Twitter feed in a prominent area of the homepage, MSNBC.com is telling its visitors that, “We care about what you think just as much as the news we publish”. I’m not sure whether MSNBC will keep the Twitter feed in place once the Murdoch inquiry is over, but I sure hope they do. If brands want to be successful online, they must build engaging hubs where traditional Web pages are complimented by engaging user generated and social content.
